Art at Stillness

Art (including craft and design) is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum and we place a great emphasis on this subject in our school. From an early age children have a natural desire to draw and we aim to equip the children with skills, knowledge and critical awareness of other art, which will inspire confidence in their own abilities as they grow older and prepare for secondary school. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and we aim to provide a high quality art education which engages, inspires and challenges pupils. They will learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

We follow the National Curriculum Art and Design programmes of study and aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

We believe that art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. Children are taught to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas, also to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, with a range of materials such as pencil, charcoal, paint and clay, and they learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.

We have worked extremely hard to ensure that the subject is embedded into our curriculum. The school has an art specialist that teaches all year groups, and there is provision for those who are more able and gifted (or particularly keen), to develop their skills further in extra weekly art lessons. A parent also runs a weekly after school club.

The appreciation and enjoyment of the arts enrich all of our lives and all work is celebrated around the school.  We also work with outside artists and organisations who provide special workshops, competitions and exhibitions to engage the children through art in the wider community.

The school is proud of their Artsmark award received in recognition of the depth and breadth of the arts taught througout the curriculum.
